Industrial Policy as an Engine of Diversification and Development

Overview

The session will be led by Dr. Ha-Joon Chang, a leading economist specialized in industrial policy, development strategy, and the role of the state in shaping economic transformation. A former faculty member at the University of Cambridge, a Member of the Board of Directors at Qatar Foundation, and now a Professor of Economics at SOAS, University of London, Dr. Chang’s work draws on historical and institutional perspectives to examine conventional free-market approaches.

His influential books, including Kicking Away the Ladder, Bad Samaritans, and 23 Things They Don’t Tell You About Capitalism, have been translated into dozens of languages. Drawing on advisory work with the UN, World Bank and national governments, Dr. Chang examines how targeted industrial policies can support economic diversification and resilient, inclusive growth, particularly in small states.
